Where to Watch

As a series of still shots or an opportunity to see Jake Gyllenhaal half-naked, no movie is better with visual poetry, but as a motion picture, especially after seeing Platoon, I’m sorry, but I can’t feel bad that the experience of war during Desert Storm was limited and removed from the daily life of a skilled soldier. Jarhead is really about being in the waiting room of life-when released from what was supposed to be the pivotal experience of their lives, would their life be better or in shambles, but either way, there is a sense that the meaninglessness of life has seeped in to war itself. After seeing Platoon, Jarhead and any number of war movies, honestly, a bunch of young guys should not ever be left alone or unsupervised or shenanigans-some benign, some dangerous, some self-destructive and some downright evil–will ensue. Though a superb cast, who really believes that Peter Sarsgaard would be in the military, Just, no.
