H.H. Holmes: America’s First Serial Killer reminds me of Unsolved Mysteries complete with reenactments and a deep-voiced narrator. H.H. Holmes: America’s First Serial Killer is not as thorough as The Devil in The White City, but still illuminating in its own way by placing it in a serial killer and forensic science historical context. Don’t examine the reenactments too closely- the actors look like they are rejects from silent films with exaggerated taped on mustaches. The talking heads are a welcome contrast to the melodramatic tone of the documentary, but was disappointed that they didn’t point out that gender roles of women being more dependent on men meant that some of his victims weren’t gullible, but obeying cultural norms. I kept thinking about Proverbs regarding entering deals with devious men. A must see for fans who miss Unsolved Mysteries, but if the subject matter does not interest you, skip it.
