I’m not familiar with Gregory Crewdson’s photographs, and I have no idea how this documentary hit my radar, but I’m happy that it did. Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters begins with him saying that you just feel drawn to some places. I thought Western Massachusetts, and it appears that he was referencing the same place! Jinx! Like Cindy Sherman, whom Crewdson cites as one of his inspirations, his photographs are like stills from a movie or a larger story but with an oneric quality. The documentary reveals his origin and process and contrasts the world that he creates with the one that his subjects actually live in. If you’re into photography or consider yourself artsy fartsy in the best way possible, Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters is a must see.
