Where to Watch

You watch Get Low because you would watch two magnificent American greats, Robert Duvall and Bill Murray, in anything (except Seven Days in Utopia….never watch that). Get Low is a period piece set in 1930s Tennessee when a hermit with a vaguely disreputable past decides that it is time to arrange and attend his funeral before he dies.
Get Low’s story has strength and weaknesses. The framing is terrific, particularly the opening scene, which is so striking, puzzling and iconic that when you find out what happened, it is a bit of a let down. The suspense and unfolding of the story is exquisite. Unfortunately I think that the larger themes of forgiveness and sin did not fully resonate with the actual story although there is a missed lesson somewhere about guilt and how light and air are great disinfectants.
