Immortality is overrated if you are not with the one that you love (see Genesis), but Aronofsky is more interested in the transcendence of perfection in creation and its necessary ingredient: death. A pastiche of Buddhism & Christianity strains the metaphor, but makes for beautiful imagery of the fall (decaying gardens, fall & winter colors) & eternal exile. Only constant: being driven out of Eden & not able to rest. The Fountain is the opposite of a popcorn movie: artsy fartsy, but with a heart.
