This Is the End was so freaking funny and gets the American Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg award for hilarity in the face of an apocalypse. First, everyone gets points for making fun of themselves, particularly a cameo by one of the most overrated actors who really can’t act, but is rightfully delighted by his sudden good fortune. Second, I got a (theologically incorrect) Revelations apocalypse with a soupçon of dystopian. Let me take this moment to explain dystopian and apocalyptic. A dystopian movie is one where every day is unbelievably awful and inhumane. An apocalyptic movie is when life is fine then some insane event occurs and suddenly changes daily life from good to unlivable. If the apocalypse does not end the world or there isn’t a solution that can make things go back to the good old days, it can become dystopian. Third, there are some really great references to classic movies. I know what you’re thinking. Do you really want to watch a movie involving part of the cast of Pineapple Express? Disregard that fact & don’t worry. You’re not subsidizing some vanity project so the actors can hang out with each other and get paid-I’m looking at you Adam Sandler or the cast from Ocean’s Eleven. It is raucous, but not Bad Santa levels of naughtiness. Ultimately a delightful apocalyptic comedy that will have you literally laughing out loud.
