I like the idea of documentaries like Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation!, American Story or other documentaries that reflect on a particular genre so I can make sure that I have not inadvertently missed any awesome movies. Unfortunately the reality does not usually match my expectations. I end up bored, disgusted and somewhat horrified by the hard core fans and filmmakers represented in the documentary. Not so with Doc of the Dead! I was actually impressed that Doc of the Dead was all encompassing in its focus: historical, sociological, psychological, scientific, cinematic, commercial, television, cos play, music, literature, survivalist, porn. I would have preferred if it was organized in a linear fashion by starting with the historical voodoo roots then progressing from classic cinema to Romero’s vision and if Max Brooks did not dominate the conversation, but overall Doc of the Dead was an enjoyable romp and a must see for fans of the zombie genre. I did not get any new movies in my queue, but I enjoyed this one.
