Where to Watch

Detention is the line between Joss Whedon’s Cabin in the Woods and parody movies made by The Wayans or starring Leslie Nielsen. Both types of movies are enjoyable, but one is incredibly intelligent and an unflinching story that operates within the subversion of the horror movie genre and the other elaborately winks while obeying the horror movie genre and sacrificing the central integrity of the story. Detention initially seems to be striving for Whedon/Craven cleverness, but by the time that the Ballad of Billy Nolan is told, though enjoyable, the movie’s story begins to fall apart at the seams & the parts do not add up into a coherent whole. I did appreciate the soundtrack & homage to different teen eras.
