Is The Day of the Jackal a good movie? Yes, BUT I wasn’t invested in it like I was in other similar thrillers such as The House on Garibaldi Street or 21 Hours at Munich because at least in those films, the filmmakers’ sympathy was on the right side of history and largely based on historical events whereas in this film, I have to choose between die-hard colonists who are basically terrorists despite their claims to the contrary & recently resigned colonists. Meh. In the end, you’re going to root for the latter because the other side is killing people willy nilly. Also it suffers the problem of French people being played by mostly British people and British people being played by British people, which is a common problem in film that I never enjoy. The positive: if you go into the film just for The Jackal and try to suss out why he is so committed to finishing the job when he does not have to (is it money, a sense of professional responsibility, enjoyment of the challenge, psychopath), then you will enjoy this straightforward film with very little score. You will have to suspend disbelief that both the British and French governments will not only be willing to work together, but do so effectively and with an unwavering focus in order to try and stop an assassination. If there was more mouse and less cat in this chase, I would have preferred the movie, especially because it would not have felt like I had been watching it since the day that I was born. On an interesting side note, as the Jackal gets more desperate, you get a Talented Mr. Ripley vibe that is quite intriguing.
