Cutie and the Boxer is an amazing documentary about art, love, collaboration, identity, family and success. Cutie and the Boxer focuses on two married artists, Ushio Shinohara, renown and penniless, and Noriko Shinohara, his wife, who finally asserts herself as an artist with a unique style and voice distinct from him. Cutie and the Boxer does not focus on, but does note that their son, who is also an artist, may have been more harmed than helped by this 40 year love affair. Cutie and the Boxer is a slice of life documentary interspersed with footage from archival video. Honestly half the fun of watching Cutie and the Boxer is seeing these two older people who definitely don’t look or act their age. Once a bohemian, always a bohemian. Bonus: cat bath!
