I blame myself for having high hopes for the remake of Carrie (2013). I think that Chloë Grace Moretz is a real actress and look forward to watching her career unfold in the future. I like Julianne Moore, but she has had some hits and misses. The focus of the movie felt too divided. A lot of the movie felt like it was more about the bullies than Carrie. There are no tone shifts for the first hour of Carrie. Every moment is punctuated by the heightened terror of each character, including the popular ones-particularly the main bully, whom I didn’t care about. It is actually a relief when the titular character loses her crap because you can finally focus on just her, sit back and enjoy. There was no focus on Carrie’s female friendship with her former bully. It felt like Mean Girls, the horror movie. Carrie was so hysterical and jumpy in the real world and then so reasonable and calm at home instead of a smoother emotional transition that the end had less of an impact. I wanted her to be a bit frazzled everywhere, but not necessarily going to pieces every second that she was in public. DePalma made the date an afterthought whereas in this version it felt like She’s All That-Carrie could really steal his heart. I thought that the most interesting character was Ms. Desjardin, the gym teacher. The last half hour is great, especially how the main bully becomes visually similar to her former victim. Not a must see except for Chloë Grace Moretz fans.
