Carl Panzram: The Spirit of Hatred and Vengeance is not like most documentaries about historical serial killers because it also provides a riveting historical account of the juvenile and adult criminal system. This documentary constantly asks the right questions: how many of Panzram’s crimes would have occurred if he wasn’t ever a part of that system and how much of it was a result of his innate pathology. The only reason that I was willing to entertain the first question is that even in the midst of Panzram’s autobiographical boasting of his crimes, he expresses regret at his treatment of animals unlike The Iceman. If he was really psychologically damaged, he would not be able to fake such concern or regret. The documentary is also a testament to kindness-if there was more than one nice guard in this bureaucracy, things may have been very different. Carl Panzram: The Spirit of Hatred and Vengeance is a must see for those interested in historical early crimes and the criminal system.
