Where to Watch

Stick with the original–I don’t care if you don’t like subtitles! Brothers wants the sizzle without the steak & unnecessarily shows the things that weren’t shown in the original: younger brother’s time in prison & act of contrition. Maguire looks like an infant in most scenes & like a crazed one in the second half. He played the war section convincingly & should always have a beard so he can stop getting carded, but fails to span the spectrum from before & after. I don’t blame Portman–they consciously made her role more moralistic, less steely & less amused by the younger brother’s antics. This family seemed too affable & apple pie in the beginning even with the alcoholic grandfather & jailhouse brother. The movie even gives the grandfather a rational excuse for being a bit of a jerk. I think that the remake wanted the melodrama of the story without the emotional maturity to get there. Maybe I would have liked it more if I didn’t JUST see the original. I think that the casting was all wrong. The military brother & his wife should have been older than younger brother. The moments where nothing happens–that’s what make a movie!
