I actually think that this film is better than A Clockwork Orange because there is no room for pity or sympathy so Bronson commits to a stylized vision, evoking the performance of the strong man of the traveling circus and silent films of the early twentieth century taken to its most extreme. Tom Hardy of Bane from The Dark Knight Rises does an amazing job as the real life, still imprisoned figure. It is not enjoyable to watch, but it is a good film. On one hand, Bronson is still in prison for offenses that he served the time for ages ago so there is obviously a violation of his rights, but on the other hand, he obviously can not be a part of a society with no need for self-sculpting berserkers. There is an interesting intersection of the opposite ends of masculinity as natural allies in a system that doesn’t accept them: homosexuals and hyper-masculine Bronson. How do you solve a problem like Bronson? You can’t because he is a person as uncomfortable as that reality is.
