Anchors Aweigh is no On The Town, but it has Gene Kelly and a young Frank Sinatra so isn’t that enough? Two sailors are on shore leave. Sinatra is by the book and awkward with girls, but is a manipulative passive aggressive friend who keeps messing up his buddy’s plans. Kelly is a reckless ladies man or is all talk. Their friendship helps them to become more like the other and find happiness. A kid runs away in the middle of the night to join the Navy. The police violate the enlisted men’s rights and seize Kelly and Sinatra without their consent to care for the kid. Hey, random sailors, take the kid. They meet the kid’s aunt. I forget how she ends up being the kid’s guardian. Ensuing shenanigans are a bit appalling. They basically convince a guy that the aunt will sleep with any sailor so Sinatra has less competition for the aunt’s affections. They almost hurt the aunt’s career by pretending that they have connections to a famous conductor, José Iturbi. If they hurt her career, how will she support her nephew?!? Then Kelly realizes he likes the aunt, but she is his best pal’s crush. Oh no, how will it work out!?! Iturbi ends up being the fairy godfather, and everything works out despite the potential for messiness and hurt feelings on every level. As long as you see Anchors Aweigh for the singing and dancing, you won’t be disappointed otherwise if you want a strong and less disturbing story, see On The Town. I still need to check out Take Me Out To The Ball Game.
