A Picture of You is a film about a brother and sister packing up their deceased mother’s home when they make a provocative discovery that throws them into a hilarious tailspin that they cannot hide from the sister’s friends who arrive to help. A Picture of You is not a tonally cohesive movie. Initially the acting feels stilted, and the pacing was too deliberate. The siblings are somewhat unlikable, but that makes their sniping feel real. People are rarely at their best when facing death or moving. A Picture of You worked for me even as it descended into a sitcom-esque realistic scenario, and I could not stop laughing.
If you have ever had to pack up a deceased loved one’s home, you will find it impossible not to relate to some of the events of A Picture of You. Any personal problems with the other people get magnified in the stark face of death. You want to be close to the deceased love one so you find it hard to sort through everything. A Picture of You’s characters felt real, and it was great to finally have a diverse cast be the main focus. The realistic characters ground A Picture of You when it becomes sitcomy, and the laughs feel earned. People who are super mature may not agree, but

It is one thing to intellectually understand that people may have porn in their house, it is quite another to find it and dispose of it. I cannot imagine taking it to the next level and discover that my mom was a swinger. That is why my rule is never dig. If you find something, just quietly keep it moving. I adored the marriage proposal, “You’ve got to be kidding me…..Yes!” The awkward and reluctant interaction with the neighbors was priceless.
Even though A Picture of You is plagued by possibly rookie mistakes, the film is so earnest and real that I loved it. I still wouldn’t try pot though. Too smelly.
