Where to Watch

The director’s release of this movie is a mixed bag. 1408 is at its best in the first half when it doesn’t overwhelm the viewer with visual indications of horror & over exaggerated camera angles, but allows Cusack’s reactions to the subtle changes in his environment to dominate the screen. I would not mind a remake with a different director, but the same actors. There is something haunting here, and I’m not referring to the legendary room from the short story by Stephen King, but a sense of inconsolable loss that the movie tries to portray and somewhat falls short. Perhaps a French director or someone like Guillermo del Toro or one of his mentees could make it a masterpiece, but Cusack and Jackson did their part.
