I wanted to read The Keep after seeing Michael Mann’s movie because the movie, though visually brilliant, was not clear regarding the story’s details. The Keep is riveting, and the only reason that I would discourage someone from reading it is because if the reader is a completist, you are not just committing to reading The Keep, but a book series and the subsequent books elicited poor reviews. The Keep has fully fleshed-out and distinguishable characters and kept me guessing until the end. There is some vampire lore, but it is more about how modern man would react when confronted by a supernatural force. Who is the greater enemy: the Nazis or this supernatural force? There are great moral questions and even the supernatural force is multifaceted and kept me wondering about his motivation-and I saw the movie.
