End of Watch is the last of a Stephen King trilogy that started with Mr. Mercedes and Finders Keepers. End of Watch resumes the war of wills between the protagonist, a retired police detective who is dealing with new personal challenges, and the original villain, a spree killer who appears to be immobilized from the last encounter. End of Watch roots the supernatural elements in science in End of Watch, but for a world similar to ours, I could not believe how quickly every one figured out the villain’s plan. Did Bill Hodges consider joining the X-Files at some point? Even though the villain’s plan and reaction to obstacles were completely plausible, he tipped his hand earlier than he had to and at times, End of Watch felt rushed to get to the denouement. Holly plays a pivotal role, and Jerome is an understandable after thought. The premise is utterly awful and sadly germane to current events. While End of Watch may not be the best Stephen King offering, it is a reliable and solid close to the trilogy.
