I’m not a fan of the movie trope where the filmmaker uses a famous person as a side story to shine a light on a problem faced by the main character, usually an everyman, who is not interesting enough to carry the movie on his own. Exception (not sure why-perhaps my undying love for Ian McKellan): Gods & Monsters. In this case, my judgment is justified. Reeves story is interesting & well played by Affleck, but Brody’s sad sack detective is a walking cliche & any hopes that I had that he would develop an interesting career have died. Perhaps The Pianist was a fluke for him. Meh. Hollywoodland could have been a tv movie on Sunday night on CBS.
