Once Colin Farrell appears and after the weak first half hour (too much teen angst about fitting in), Fright Night (2011) snaps into focus & vampirism becomes a chilling metaphor for human predators: serial killers, pedophiles & rapists. He preys on the type of women who get blamed for being raped–because they dress a certain way or have a disreputable job–& targets vulnerable teens, mostly male. There is one chilling scene in a nightclub that actually happened in real life (minus the vampirism) in NYC (I am NOT kidding). This is not the funny Fright Night of your youth. It is about wounded & broken people abandoned by the authorities to fight against an unspeakable evil. One scene evokes memories of Dahmer’s ability to elude accountability. One great cameo & literally the most amazing assassination of a vampire that I have ever seen to date (& I have seen many).
