Because I am a completist, I watched Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, an undeserved sequel that was substantially better than the dreadful first film. I know that this movie was not made for me, but I can see how adults could appreciate elements of this film if the kids in their life forced them to watch it. While I wish that the movies would abandon the premise that the Scooby Gang is famous, and the press treats them like disillusioned celebrities, at least the sequel uses this conceit to full effect.
Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed has the gang at a museum exhibit premiere that features the disguises of all the villains that they faced. When the costumes come to life, the press discredits the gang, and they have to figure out who is behind the latest scheme. This investigation leads to each of the heroes grappling with their insecurities and identities with surprisingly emotionally nuanced answers….except for Fred, who is the dud of the group. Even the villains get a bit of empathy.
Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed urges everyone to stop feeling like you have to hide who you really are, accept your flaws and your past and move forward willing to make new connections instead of brooding over something that you can’t change. Also the soundtrack was actually good. I still don’t think that you should see it or that there should be any more live action sequels, but if you had to watch it, you won’t suffer as much as you would while watching the first.
