Where to Watch

Think Girls except with fewer likable characters & even more naturalistic–mumblecore. Those who surround the struggling couple are more interesting than the couple. The girlfriend is barely tolerable: she wants the companionship of her boyfriend–which includes being there when she wants and not hanging out with women who make her feel less pretty, but sex with guys that she is attracted to. The guy thinks that he can’t live without her, but is way happier, which doesn’t stop him from coming when she calls. The whole movie works on one level, but I found the situation so annoying that I couldn’t enjoy Breaking Upward despite the amazing performances of the older actors. The older actors should have told their kids to leave them alone & just made a movie by themselves.
