After seeing the dreadful Tina Fey adaptation of Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, also known as The Taliban Shuffle, I decided to read the book. The good news is that that the book, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, also known as The Taliban Shuffle, by Kim Barker is way better than the film, but it is still not a captivating read. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, also known as The Taliban Shuffle, is torn between being an autobiography/memoir and being a chronicle of serious events that unfold in Afghanistan and Pakistan post 9/11. The writing style and enjoyability are directly proportional to how clear the conflict is in the region that Barker is writing about. Afghanistan is a messier conflict so Barker has a harder time conveying her thoughts in that section of the book. The film solely focuses on her time there and has almost no similarity to Barker’s actual account. I preferred Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, also known as The Taliban Shuffle, when it focused on Pakistan. Even though Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, also known as The Taliban Shuffle, was better than the movie, the uneven writing and tone kept me from completely immersing myself in the book so unless you are interested in first person outsider accounts of life in Afghanistan and Pakistan post 9/11, I would not recommend it.
