Where to Watch

Despite some initial pacing problems, poor special effects & occasional character that lacks ability to prioritize enemies, the alien invasion takes a back seat to the more compelling story of the kids on the block. In light of recent riots in UK, Attack the Block is a moving tale of how people have to fight hard against low expectations & lack of resources, unite as a community & even after succeeding, there may not be a happy ending because of society’s expectations. But the director gives the audience a few elements of hope that left me teary eyed: use of the Union Jack in the penultimate battle, the neighborhood uniting & the neighbor that is believed by society finally recognizes the real problem: no real adult ally to help them in any struggle, whether daily or sensational. The open ended scene suggests that depending on how society reacts, these children will either riot or become heroes, but it is up to society to decide. Chilling, sad, but maybe the Red Sea will part (main character’s name is Moses & I couldn’t resist).
