Monsters is tragic mumble core meets Cloverfield except the aliens barely care about the human beings. How many movies wouldn’t exist if the main characters didn’t do obviously stupid crap? Why is she in Mexico? Who gives someone else their ID? Despite that, Monsters manages to evoke awe in the face of nature, both majestic and miniature, communion among different cultures and people and create a convincing daily life complicated by having to coexist with enormous alien creatures that unlike their invading 50s counterpart, did not intentionally invade, but are forced by humanity, specifically the US, to make a home in an extremely hostile environment. Please note that Monsters’ creator denies any metaphoric ambitions to editorialize about illegal immigration. After you finish Monsters, rewatch the opening scene or watch the opening scene very closely. Monsters may not be the best character study, but overall it evokes emotions about the beauty and simplicity of life that make it worth watching.
