Where to Watch

I like Terry Gilliam, and even though he is a genuine, Dali-like surreal genius, I wasn’t into The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. I think that Gilliam is trying to make a point about prioritizing in times of crisis, the need for balance between the mind (ideals) and the body (physical pleasure) without elevating one for the other and the casual cruelty of authority. Immediately after 9/11, people questioned the role and usefulness of art, entertainment and comedy. Gilliam would never question it and instead makes stories more important than death. Gilliam prioritizes excellence in the face of obstacles whether rooted in nature or bureaucracy. The cast is perfect, and it was nice to see Robin Williams. Still I didn’t care about the actual story, and it felt visually dated. I suppose this comedy of manners is not my cup of tea. The Adventures of Baron Munchausen felt like Gilliam’s take on Alice in Wonderland meets Monty Python as opposed to one of his unique creations. The Adventures of Baron Munchausen is only a must see if you’re a fan of Gilliam or the cast.
