I decided to watch F/X because it is a well known movie classic. F/X is dated, but in a nostalgic “hey, there is a shot of the World Trade Center” old NYC way. Now that anyone with a laptop can produce a movie with amazing special effects and download it to YouTube for anyone to see, F/X’s main character, Rollie, an expert in special effects, is less a cutting edge, modern magician than a beloved artifact preserved in celluloid, a movie MacGyver for the 80s. F/X still works for several reasons: each character has excellent plot development, including the villains; though dated, his clever character’s tricks still are amazing; and from the opening credits to the end of the F/X, the audience still has to question what is movie reality versus movie fiction. F/X loses some steam and becomes a bit cheesy after 40 minutes when the focus shifts from Rollie and is split between the villains and a NYPD detective investigating Rollie’s involvement in a murder of a crime boss played by Jerry Orbach (Lennie Briscoe!!!). Side note: Angela Bassett appeared in F/X at 49:39 in her first credited role! Blink and you’ll miss it. Not a must see, but a nice trip down memory lane.
