Where to Watch

I finally got around to watching the fifth and final season of UK’s Being Human. Even if this season wasn’t supposed to be related to the first three seasons and was only related to the fourth, it is still problematic because the obstacle was too great and too absurd to take seriously even in a fictional show. Even within the mythological universe of Being Human, it felt like there were some inconsistencies with the rules of this world. Also it is the 70s sitcom of supernatural dramas-the plot relies on too many miscommunications and misunderstandings to move forward. If you have an ancient vampire, surely he would avoid SOME of these pitfalls even while struggling with his blood lust.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS

Just having any vampire, werewolf and ghost combination isn’t sufficient. No one from the original cast is in the show any longer, and that would be fine if it was a reboot because the final cast had great chemistry, but Being Human suffers from an American problem: knowing when to end a show gracefully instead of milking its earlier success. The big bad of the final season is THE DEVIL. Being Human tries to use a Biblical devil while not using the Biblical rules of how to defeat him, which would be fine if it had clearly delineated what the shows’ rules are, but it never does and it feels like they are making it up as it goes along. I did appreciate the final scene that implies that the devil won; humanity is dead and the shows’ heroes are stuck in their happy dreamland, but happily together. What does the devil get out of that? The idea that the devil just enjoys making people become suicidal has limitations. What do you do after they are all dead? The villain needed more character development like the human bureaucracy that tries to stop the supernatural world from encroaching on the human world. That concept was working, especially as it got to be more evil than the supernatural world, but since largely not present in first three seasons, was a tad unbelievable. Pretend that Being Human ended after three seasons if you decide to watch it.
