The Returned, also known as Les Revenants, is not related to the tv show, Resurrection (which is based on a US novel also called The Returned), but this French tv series is related to an earlier French movie with the same title. The tv series has far more sensational moments than the movie did, but still has that French sensibility: a willingness to confront issues of death and loss without devolving into an action movie. There is a lot of character development and a deliberate pacing that manages to have cliffhangers without being cheap or predictable except in one circumstance: one woman wears a white short flowy skirt then walks through an underpass. What could happen? Because it is the first season, all the questions aren’t answered, but many of them are. If you are looking for traditional zombies, keep moving. French zombies love, lose, reform and have existential crises. The main premise of The Returned: confronting the the past and moving on from a point of trauma is hard even if you’re dead.
