Mike Leigh is one of the best movie directors ever. I am shocked that somehow this film escaped my attention, but the situation was immediately & blissfully rectified at the earliest possible moment. Life is Sweet is like most of Leigh’s films: it captures the average, unremarkable moments of daily life, including the awkward and unsuccessful ones! Leigh knows how to show the rhythm and strong, sometimes inexplicable, bonds between people in the quotidian world. A must see for Leigh fans, but for beginners, try Secrets and Lies. If you get the DVD, look at the special features, which Five-Minute Films which include Probation; The Birth of the Goalie of the 2001 F.A. Cup Final, Old Chums; A Light Snack and Afternoon.
