Lars and the Real Girl is one of those movies that if the world was more like the movie, the world would be a better place. It is a world where a man with a delusion mostly sparks concern & acceptance, not disgust from his community. Asking WWJD means Jesus would be kind and not alienate the man. Lars’ break from reality would be seen as an opportunity for self-reflection and correction regarding what should have been done in the past and what could be done now to teach Lars about being part of a community. The movie balances a fine line by acknowledging that a grown man is walking around with a sex toy, but somehow does not take it to a vulgar place. I think that while watching the movie, it is important to acknowledge how we are like Lars: racing away from human contact out of fear or awkwardness, not recognizing that you are surrounded by people who love you, mistaking that a person not being available at your beck and call does not mean that you are cared for any less. A must see. So good that I went to bed after watching it because I knew anything that I watched after it wouldn’t be as good.
