I’m not a fan of movies that use the weighty historical story to shine a light on a problem faced by a character in the viewer’s time, but after a little over thirty minutes, the connection between the stories clicked, and my exploitation alarm stopped going off. I do think that by juxtaposing the stories, a viewer can’t help drawing a comparison, and though Kristin Scott Thomas’ character is serious, it isn’t Holocaust serious, and that detracts from the movie. Also Sarah’s adult story feels rushed & elusive as Thomas’ character’s gains momentum. Overall I thought that Sarah’s Key was more effective at clearly delineating how the past affected the present, and clearly telling each individual’s essential story. Preferred it to One Day You’ll Understand, which dealt with the same subject matter, but that could reflect more about my tastes being more conventional when approaching a foreign narrative.
