Where to Watch

First half of the film should be called why women’s bodies are treated as the “other.” If you’re not a nun, on screen for only a few seconds (a sexy waitress before the narrator enters seminary & a passing sexy motorcyclist) &/or any woman, only one can live–yah Smurfette principle. Seriously, the first corpse, the bicyclist, the pregnant sixteen year old girl. The obsession with women’s bodies as a ticking time bomb was particularly creepy. The novice even has to shut the bathroom door because Mary is looking at him while peeing. If you’re a male under threat of possession or already possessed, you will either be totally fine or get to be awesomely threatening. The final exorcism scene is cool because just invoking name of Jesus Christ is all kinds of awesome, even in fiction, but even this didn’t save The Rite. There were so many spectacular actors that it seemed like a waste: Rutger Hauer (love), Ciaran Hinds, Toby Jones and (le sigh) Anthony Hopkins, who has basically been playing Hannibal Lecter for a long time now & maybe needs to retire. Meh. So done with crisis of faith but brought back to Jesus after facing the devil movies. So cliche.
