Once you accept Disgrace as a metaphor for how South Africans have no choice but to build a future together regardless of all the wrong done to each other, the film becomes easier to digest. Conventional concepts of justice cannot apply or else there would be no one left standing. I would have had numerous issues with the gender dynamics if they weren’t consciously being used for that purpose. A great film, but not one to watch if you are already depressed. Does the dog die? Repeatedly.
