Even though I enjoyed The Wave: In Pursuit of the Rogues, Freaks, and Giants of the Ocean, I didn’t like the structure. Susan Casey tells the story the way that she experiences it so if someone interrupts the conversation, then we experience it, which leads to confusion. Which ship wreck are we talking about? Who is talking? Which surfing expedition went wrong? So when she later on resumes the story, it is difficult to figure out which story is resuming. Although surfers were relevant to the story, it felt more like she wanted an excuse to hang out with surfers and write about it and the science provides the thin veneer of legitimacy. There is a good story in here, but it takes concentration to find it. Not for people truly interested in the science, but some good peeks into historical events.
