Latter Days has the feel of a small scale Christian evangelical film, complete with extended music sequences, wooden acting, somewhat stereotypical two dimensional characters & a big revelation moment that one is loved & accepted, but in the context of a Mormon missionary coming to terms with his homosexuality & a shallow gay man coming to terms with wanting more meaning & genuine love in his life as their paths intersect. When this movie first came out, because of the subject matter, i.e. any story about gay people in love is considered groundbreaking, I think that the numerous flaws were forgiven because the emotions behind it, particularly the last half hour, are so powerful & genuine. In the future, I think this movie will be placed in the same category as Cooley High, Boyz In the Hood, etc.-stories that seemed revolutionary because of who the main characters are, but actually a predictable & conventional story. Warning: there are sexual situations.
