Jane Eyre (2011) is not exactly a faithful adaptation of the book & no masterpiece, but still fun–probably because of Magneto, ahem, Michael Fassbinder, & Judi Dench. What I miss: faux supernatural elements of the book, which unfortunately only dominate the deleted scenes, & Jane Eyre’s representation as a real Christian in between two equally negative patriarchal worlds: the pagan, passionate, instinctually & appealing wild world of Mr. Rochester pre-the big denouement & the hypocritical, stern, unloving “Christian” world represented by most of the men, even the good ones like her cousin, Mr. Rivers. Jane as a real Christian feminist has to say no to any proposal that would violate her moral conscience, i.e. Rochester’s proposal of living a lie & just devoting herself to a life of passion, i.e. the body, and no to Mr. Rivers’ life without passion & just sacrifice, i.e. the mind. She embraces & embodies both & would prefer to live an alternative lifestyle, work, than traditional compromise of marriage.
