Where to Watch

Ride With The Devil felt anachronistic to me. It felt like they brought a modern sensibility to racial, gender & immigrant politics to a nineteenth century setting. Gasp, can you believe that Southerners during the Civil War could be intolerant to immigrants & blacks! And see how that immigrant totally relates to the ex-slave because of how they’re not seen as people? Clutching pearls mode. Oh wait, no, it is the Civil War & nineteenth century. Yadda yadda. Ang Lee beautiful scenery, check. Jewel didn’t suck as an actress, check. Weren’t Southern men so decent to women, check. Best part of the film was the examination of guerrilla war tactics and neighbors against neighbors, but the film kind of veers radically between war, romance & politics without any subtlety that it fails to say much about any one topic. And though I still hate Tobey Maguire’s face, I have nothing bad to say about him in this movie other than I hope that he gets a patent every time a baby faced male actor does something. Cha ching.
